Liverpool stun City, Dortmund lose ground

While Liverpool impressed in a 4-1 triumph at Manchester City, Jürgen Klopp's old side and fellow UEFA Europa League hopefuls Dortmund slipped further off the pace in Germany.

There were contrasting results for Jürgen Klopp's current club Liverpool and his old side Dortmund as the UEFA Europa League teams warmed up for matchday five across the continent.

Liverpool turned heads by inflicting a comprehensive 4-1 home loss on Premier League high-fliers Manchester City, with Klopp's dynamic Reds racing into a 3-0 half-time lead on their way to knocking their hosts off the summit. The German coach's former employers BVB slipped to a 3-1 reverse at Hamburg, on the other hand, and fell eight points behind leaders Bayern München in second spot.

The title race continues to take fascinating shape in Italy, meanwhile, where Napoli triumphed 2-0 at Verona to stay within two points of top dogs Internazionale, and level with fellow group stage hopefuls Fiorentina. As for Villarreal, they climbed into the top four in Spain despite a draw, while Ajax slotted five goals past Cambuur to continue their fine form in the Eredivisie.
