Manchester United will be keen to make a strong start to their UEFA Europa League campaign on Thursday after losing 2-1 at home to city neighbours Manchester City on an action-packed weekend for the group sides.

José Mourinho finished second best to old rival Josep Guardiola as City caught the eye in a dazzling first half at Old Trafford on Saturday, Kevin De Bruyne scoring one goal and setting up another before Zlatan Ibrahimović responded. United will now be looking to bounce back quickly away to Feyenoord, who dispatched ADO Den Haag 3-1 in the Eredivisie.

In contrast, there was much to be pleased about for Roma and Francesco Totti as the veteran forward buried a last-minute penalty to hand the Giallorossi a 3-2 success against Sampdoria – just over two weeks before his 40th birthday.

There was late drama in Nice too, where Mario Balotelli marked his debut for Les Aiglons with two goals and Wylan Cyprien sealed a 3-2 defeat of Marseille. Elsewhere, Shakhtar drew 1-1 with eternal rivals Dynamo Kyiv to stay three points clear in Ukraine, while Qäbälä slotted eight unanswered goals past Neftci in Azerbaijan.
