There were mixed fortunes for the four former European champions in action as the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round got under way – with PSV Eindhoven losing at home and AC Milan, Olympique Marseille and Crvena Zvezda all winning.
Ricardo Rodríguez's 44th-minute strike was enough for Milan to win at U Craiova, as the Rossoneri began their quest for the one UEFA trophy to still elude them. However, PSV – 1978 UEFA Cup winners – were beaten in Eindhoven by Croatian side Osijek, Borna Barišić's penalty doing the damage.
Things were more comfortable for Crvena zvezda and Marseille, who took two-goal advantages from the respective visits of Sparta Praha and Oostende.
Elsewhere Wayne Rooney's second debut for Everton came in a narrow victory over Ružomberok. Athletic Club drew at Dinamo București, while Fenerbahçe and Zenit both won away.
