Schönenberger sacked by Thun

FC Thun have surprisingly sacked coach Urs Schönenberger - just three days before they make their UEFA Cup debut against Hamburger SV.

Final straw
Already languishing in the bottom half of the Swiss Super League following a disappointing autumn campaign, Thun were held to a goalless draw at Neuchâtel Xamax FC yesterday in their first game back after the winter break. That proved the final straw for the club's board, with president Kurt Weder explaining: "Schönenberger has had a lot of success here, but there have been problems with the team and there wasn't enough belief any more."

Whirlwind spell
His assistant Adrian Kunz will take the reins, ending a whirlwind 13-month spell for Schönenberger, who was installed as successor to Hanspeter Latour in January 2005. The 46-year-old guided Thun to a second-placed league finish, before wins against FC Dynamo Kyiv and Malmö FF earned qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage where they finished third behind Arsenal FC and AFC Ajax. But their league form suffered and a run of one victory in ten matches has prompted Schönenberger's dismissal.
