Paris followed up their first UEFA Champions League triumph in May by becoming the first French side to earn Super Cup honours in August, but were pushed hard by Tottenham, who impressed on their competitive debut under Thomas Frank.

Taking on the treble-winning Parisians appeared not to faze Spurs, who attacked with precision and purpose in the first half. Like Frank, summer signing Mohammed Kudus made a positive first impression in attack, as did the energetic Richarlison. However, it was centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero who struck either side of half-time to give Spurs a two-goal lead.

Frank's men protected that lead well until the 85th minute, but their effort unravelled as Kang-in Lee's superb strike beat Guglielmo Vicario before Gonçalo Ramos headed in the added-time leveller, masterfully supplied by Player of the Match Ousmane Dembélé.

Paris also fell behind in in the ensuing shoot-out when Vitinha shot wide from their first spot kick, but they again showed that they could be clinical when it counted – Gonçalo Ramos, Dembélé, Lee, and Nuno Mendes converting while debutant Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel shot wide.

Luis Enrique: 'We were very lucky'

The triumph crowns Paris as the 26th different winner of the Super Cup and adds France to the list of 13 different nations whose clubs have claimed glory. Meanwhile, head coach Luis Enrique earned his second title as a manager, previously winning with Barcelona in 2015, and his third overall – also triumphing with the Catalan club as a player in 1997.
