Holders take first-leg initiative

FC Energy Voronezh 1-2 Umeå IK Goals from Jessica Julin and Hanna Marklund gave the visitors a victory in Russia.

UEFA Women's Cup holders Umeå IK moved a step closer to a place in the semi-finals of this season's competition with a 2-1 win at FC Energy Voronezh in the first leg of their quarter-final.

One-goal advantage
The away victory gave Richard Holmlund's side a one-goal advantage to defend in the return match at the Gammliavallen stadium in Umea on 23 November.

Frantic spell
All the goals at the central stadium in Voronezh came in a hectic 13-minute spell midway through the first half, with Energy Voronezh coach Ivan Saenko seeing his team take the lead after 20 minutes through forward Elena Danilova.

Quick reply
However, Energy Voronezh's advantage lasted only three minutes before midfield player Jessica Julin equalised for Umeå, and the turnaround was complete two minutes past the half-hour as Hanna Marklund gave the visitors the lead.

Red cards
The home side's chances of getting back on level terms suffered a blow ten minutes before half-time as forward Elena Lamtyugina was shown the red card and Umeå preserved their slender advantage throughout the second half, although Holmlund's team also ended the match with ten players following the 86th-minute dismissal of defender Frida Östberg.
