Frankfurt clinched the trophy in front of 3,000 fans in Bonn with a 1-0 victory against FCR 2001 Duisburg, Meike Weber scoring the only goal in the last minute. Turbine, meanwhile, stalled in the quarter-finals, losing 3-2 to SC Freiburg. The tournament is played annually during the outdoor Bundesliga's winter break.
'Great advertisement'
"This tournament was a great advertisement for women's football. Nobody had expected such a great atmosphere and such packed stands," said Frankfurt coach Hans-Jürgen Tritschoks. Duisburg boss Dietmar Herhaus agreed: "This was an extraordinary tournament and Frankfurt were deserving winners."
'We need more stars'
German international playmaker Renate Lingor was voted player of the tournament, while she, team-mate Birgit Prinz and SC Bad Neuenahr's Isabell Bachor shared the Golden Boot with six goals apiece. "This tournament was great fun. But we need more stars than just [German internationals] Birgit Prinz, Renate Lingor, Conny Pohlers and Anja Mittag," said German Football Association president Theo Zwanziger.
