Fortuna keen to strike it rich

With the end of the Danish season in sight, the top of the table has a familiar complexion with Fortuna Hjørring and Brøndby IF once again leading the way.

Decisive match
Brøndby have ruled the roost for the past three seasons, but with less than two months remaining of the current campaign, many observers feel Fortuna are set to reclaim the title they last held in 2002. The north Jutland team lie just two points behind their bitter rivals, with a game in hand, after the teams drew 0-0 in Brøndby on 13 April. A potentially decisive reverse fixture was scheduled for four days later but was postponed due to poor conditions at the Hjørring Stadion.

Skovbakken lagging
Should Fortuna prevail there, they will be odds on for the title as neither side look like dropping points elsewhere. Such is their dominance, that a massive 15 points separate Fortuna from third-placed IK Skovbakken, despite the Hjørring outfit playing two fewer games. It is little surprise that the leading duo will provide two-thirds of the 18-strong Denmark squad for next week’s FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier against Spain.

OB in great trouble
Success is always fleeting, however, and if Fortuna and Brøndby wish to avoid complacency, they need only glance down at the foot of the table. Last place is currently occupied by a former stronghold in Danish women's football, Odense BK, who are in great danger of being relegated, after picking up a paltry eight points this season. That is two fewer than nearest rivals Team Viborg.
