Jubilant 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam coach Bernd Schröder hailed his teenage striker Isabel Kerschowski for her match-winning cameo in the German Women's Cup final, just hours after touching down from international duty. The 18-year-old scored the opening goal eleven minutes from time as the eastern side went on to beat 1. FFC Frankfurt 2-0 for their third consecutive cup triumph.
Scoring feats
It was the culmination of a momentous week for Kerschowski, who played a starring role as Germany secured a berth at the UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship. She scored hat-tricks in two consecutive games at a mini-tournament in Slovenia, including one against the hosts on Friday, before flying to Berlin where she took her place on the bench.
Searing pace
A product of the Potsdam youth academy, Kerschowski is best known for her searing pace. She has clocked a time of 12.6 seconds over 100 metres and is acknowledged as the fastest player in the Bundesliga. The teenager showed speed of a different kind when she entered the fray with the scores goalless 13 minutes from time on Saturday, taking just 80 seconds to put Potsdam in front. "It's hard to describe, just unbelievable. The ball fell to me and I managed to score with my weaker foot," she said.
Treble pledge
Schröder said the player's emergence demonstrates Turbine’s faith in young talents, a policy that seems to be paying dividends with Potsdam closing in on a treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Women's Cup. "Isabel stands for the difference: where other teams sign established players, we trust in our talented kids. In the next few years we will see the emergence of three or four players of her class," said Schröder, sounding a warning ahead of the UEFA Women's Cup final – also against Frankfurt – later this month. "I declare that we will now get all three titles."
