Frankfurt clinch the cup

1.FFC Frankfurt won the German Cup for the sixth time on Saturday but only after getting the better of FCR Duisburg with a 5-2 win on penalties.

Early domination
Frankfurt took command of the game early on as Petra Wimbersky was denied two minutes in but within 60 seconds of that chance Renate Lingor scored from the penalty spot after Birgit Prinz had been brought down in the area. The game lost much of its appeal thereafter with Duisburg struggling to create any concrete chances and only a hint of danger coming from set-pieces. However, Duisburg equalised on the stroke of half-time when Sonja Fuss got on the end of Fatmire Bajramaj long ball to make it 1-1.

Penalty shoot-out
After the break Frankfurt failed to rediscover their earlier self-assurance and matters got worse for them when Lingor was forced off the pitch after an hour. In the last 20 minutes both sides had good opportunities to decide the match, the best of which fell to Kerstin Garefrekes whose header was cleared off the line 13 minutes from time. The game went to penalties and Frankfurt’s greater experience told as Prinz, Sandra Smisek, Louise Hansen and Wimbersky all scored, while Duisburg'’s Vanessa Martini and Patricia Harnebeck saw their efforts saved by Frankfurt custodian Ursula Holl. "We hit very steady penalties, and Ursula saved two of theirs brilliantly. I think it was about time that we won the cup again," said Prinz.

Double bid
Frankfurt will complete the double next Sunday and earn a chance to win a third UEFA Women's Cup if they win at SC 07 Bad Neuenahr. Duisburg, five points behind with two games left, must get three points at TSV Crailsheim and hope Bad Neuenahr do them a favour.
