'Tough' AZ proud, Everton frustrated

While favourites like the last two runners-up Olympique Lyonnais and Zvezda-2005 picked up away wins in this week's UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 first legs, Everton found themselves held 0-0 at MTK Hungária FC and Iceland's Breidablik lost 3-0 at home to opponents they had drawn with in qualifying, FCF Juvisy Essonne. UEFA.com rounds up the reaction before the second legs on 13 and 14 October.

AZ Alkmaar 1-2 Olympique Lyonnais
Ed Engelkes, AZ coach

I was very happy with my team's performance. Of course it was obvious that Lyon are the better team. But AZ played with discipline and had the right attitude. Playing Lyon is like AZ's male team playing Real Madrid. Considering Lyon are professionals, I can only be proud of my girls.

Patrice Lair, Lyon coach
I'm satisfied with this victory. AZ were very tough to beat. Actually AZ did better than expected. I am confident about the second leg. My team has had a warning and have to do a better job than tonight.

Apollon Limassol LFC 1-2 Zvezda-2005
Margarita Sofocleous, Apollon captain

We were happy with our performance in the first half but things changed after the interval. We had some problems with injuries and fatigue and in the end it cost us. Things are not over yet. We have only finished the first half and another game awaits us in Russia. We will do our best to reach our target in the second leg.

Andreas Marangos, Apollon chairman
We will be going to Russia with the sole aim of reaching the last 16 of the competition, no matter how hard our target may be. We have nothing to fear from this tie. I am pleased with the effort of the players but obviously not with the final result.

MTK Hungária FC 0-0 Everton
Sándor Turtóczky, MTK coach

We started slowly and had several moments of luck which we're grateful for but we improved and held them well. In the second half we looked more confident and threatened their goal a bit more but unfortunately our girls tired towards the end as expected, so we are happy with the draw. Of course we have a chance in the second leg and of course we will fight to achieve our target.

Mo Marley, Everton manager
MTK were well organised and hard to break down, but we lacked quality in the final third so we need to be more disciplined as well as defending resolutely, which we know we are good at. As for changes in the next leg we believe in what we do and we'll look at the team selection, but this was the first game of our season really apart from the first Champions League qualifiers so we need some continuity. We have lots to do but we are confident and we'll relish the game back home.

Breidablik 0-3 FCF Juvisy Essonne
Jóhannes Karl Sigursteinsson, Breidablik coach

This game didn't go as well as we wanted. We conceded an early goal so it was tough right from the beginning. I am happy with our fighting spirit despite going a goal down so early. We tried our very best but all in all we didn't create enough chances and we should have been more calm when we got the ball. These games are great experience for my girls and we will give our best in the second leg in France.
