Arsenal and Everton show no rust

Arsenal LFC and Everton may not have played a competitive domestic game this season but they had no problems moving into the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 on Thursday in what for both were there first home matches of 2010/11.

The Gunners, European champions in 2007, beat Serbia's ŽFK Mašinac 9-0 to set up a round of 16 tie with Rayo Vallecano on 3/4 and 10/11 November, with manager Laura Harvey delighted with Arsenal's performance considering the new FA Women's Super League does not launch until next spring. Everton had been held 0-0 at MTK Hungária FC in the away leg but won the return 7-1 to move through a two-legged European tie for the first time and Mo Marley is "looking forward to the challenge" of Brøndby IF.

Not conceding was good and the fact we didn't stop. When you are four goals to the good at half-time you can let off and considering we don't have many competitive games it was good we made the most of the 90 minutes, that was the most pleasing thing. To be able to come and play at Champions League standard is hard, and even playing friendlies is hard as you don't have consistent games that you usually have by this stage so it is tougher than expected to be honest. [Rayo Vallecano] are at a different level, we're trying to get as many matches in between now and then.

We said before in the huddle that we weren't pleased with the performance out there [in the away leg] so in the first 20 minutes we set the tempo of the game, to show what we wanted to do. I enjoyed playing today, it's nice to be back home and playing and the next game will be a different level. We have to make sure we're prepared for that.

Congratulations to Arsenal. We weren't able to match them like in the first team. Our team is young and have a lot of work to do reach that level. In the first leg we played in a different way, we showed our strength. But we weren't successful today, we don't have the experience. Our passing was poor and tactically we were not at our best.

We were frustrated out there in the first leg and came away disappointed, so we had a point to prove to ourselves and today's performance showed what we were all about. We were at home, we took the initiative and that showed with our early goals and set the tempo for the rest of the game. It is a new chapter for us in the Champions League. We have taken a bit of criticism for not progressing through the rounds in the past and we wanted to show that we are worthy being in the last stages of the competition. We know it will be tough but we are looking forward to the challenge.

I think it was a great result for us. We made history for the club in getting through to the next round. The girls worked really hard out there tonight and our performance showed how far we have come and how well we are working together as a team. I was happy with my own individual performance but I couldn't have done it without the other girls.
