Perfect night for Germany and Sweden's clubs

It was a good day for the traditional forces of European female club football as both German and Swedish entrants won the first legs of their UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 ties.

There were comfortable home victories for Germany's former champions 1. FFC Frankfurt and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam while FC Malmö and Göteborg FC prevailed away from home. Brøndby IF were the night's other winners as UEFA.com rounds up the action.

The three other first legs are played on Thursday with Arsenal LFC visiting Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, the all-Russian meeting of FC Energiya Voronezh and FC Rossiyanka, and holders Olympique Lyonnais going to Sparta Praha.

1. FFC Frankfurt 3-0 Paris Saint-Germain FC
The three-time champions secured a comprehensive win against a side who drew 0-0 with Lyon at the weekend. Frankfurt quickly settled in front of 2,610 fans, Melanie Behringer hitting the bar from distance early on and Laure Boulleau striking her own post after a shot from Fatmire Bajramaj, who opened the scoring with a brilliant effort from a tight angle on nine minutes.

Frankfurt's dominance continued, though without clear chances until two minutes into the second half when Véronique Pons parried Svenja Huth's shot and Kerstin Garefrekes turned in the rebound. Behringer made it three soon after, her shot deflecting in off Jessica Houara, and PSG have a huge task to maintain their debut campaign next Wednesday.

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 10-0 Glasgow City LFC
Last season's runners-up Potsdam look set to make it six quarter-finals from as many appearances after a comfortable result against the first Scottish side to make it to this stage. The twice winners led inside 80 seconds when Genoveva Añonman looped in a shot after a cross from Bianca Schmidt, who doubled the lead on 15 minutes following a touch-on from Patricia Hanebeck. Ten minutes later Anja Mittag broke Glasgow's offside trap to chase down Viola Odebrecht's through pass and struck from the edge of the box.

Just as in the first half, Añonman struck two minutes into the second period, again after a Schmidt cross, the same source by which Yuki Nagasato swiftly claimed the fifth, the Japanese international quickly adding another after Glasgow's defence were again beaten for pace. Mittag headed in to make it 7-0 on 72 minutes, and swiftly completed her hat-trick. An Amy McDonald own goal and Mittag's fourth added to the scoreline. The return is next Thursday.

SV Neulengbach 1-3 FC Malmö
Malmö, Swedish champions for the last two years, look set to progress next Thursday after a useful victory in Austria despite being depleted by injury.  Nilla Fischer had already hit the crossbar when Sara Bjork Gunnarsdóttir broke the deadlock six minutes in with a header. Manon Melis made it two soon after when she intercepted a back pass and produced a powerful strike.

Melis had the chance for another in the 56th minute when Monica Hickmann Alves handled for a penalty but the Netherlands striker was brilliantly denied by Manuela Zinsberger and Maria Gstöttner pulled one back soon after. However, with 13 minutes left Melis set up Gunnarsdóttir to make it 3-1, and it could have been more had it not been for a fine display from Zinsberger.

Fortuna Hjørring 0-1 Göteborg FC
Fortuna, the 2003 runners-up, must come from behind next Thursday against the Swedish newcomers after defeat in Denmark. Jane Törnqvist pounced on a fumble from home goalkeeper Heidi Johansen to score 12 minutes in and the visitors never looked back, having the better of the chances and rarely being put under pressure.

Brøndby IF 2-1 ASD Torres CF
The meeting of the Danish and Italian champions is far more evenly poised. Both sides had gone close when Lise Munk headed in Theresa Nielsen's cross on 41 minutes. Torres responded within seconds thanks to Sandy Iannella's low shot. Two-time semi-finalists Brøndby were on top after the break and Munk ensured they had a lead to take to Italy next Wednesday when with eight minutes left she turned in a Julie Rydahl Bukh corner from the right at the near post.
