Hammarby will look to banish memories of their previous meeting with Barcelona as they welcome the holders to Stockholm on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Women's Champions League.

Barcelona are on the cusp of reaching the quarter-finals from Group D following a 4-1 win at St. Pölten on Matchday 4, when Hammarby fell to a 1-2 defeat at home to Manchester City – their third straight group stage loss and second in a row against City.

Barcelona will be through to the quarter-finals if they avoid defeat by nine goals or more. They will be confirmed in second place if they do not beat Hammarby and City win at home to St. Pölten, or if Barcelona lose and City avoid defeat.

Previous meetings

Barcelona matched their record European victory by putting nine goals past Hammarby on Matchday 2 in a game that featured seven different scorers. Caroline Graham Hansen (10, 75) and Clàudia Pina (24, 58) both scored twice in addition to goals from Alexia Putellas (45), María León (53), Ewa Pajor (72), Esmee Brugts (86) and Fridolina Rolfö (90pen).

This is Hammarby's first home game against Spanish visitors.

The Swedish debutants began Group D with a 2-0 win against St. Pölten, but have not added to their points tally since.

Hammarby are taking part in a first Women's Champions League campaign and have reached the group stage at the first attempt.

The Swedish outfit went directly into round 2, where they faced last season's quarter-finalists Benfica. Julie Blakstad gave the home side a 16th-minute lead in the first leg in Stockholm on 18 September, but Benfica hit back to win 2-1.

A week later in Lisbon, Blakstad once again scored in the 16th minute to level the tie. That set the stage for a 95th-minute Cathinka Tandberg goal to send Hammarby through at the Portuguese side's expense.

Since being appointed in January, Martin Sjögren's record as Hammarby head coach is W25 D3 L9; his side had won four successive home games without conceding before the Matchday 4 defeat by Manchester City.

Hammarby claimed a long-awaited Damallsvenskan title in 2023, the second time they had been crowned Swedish champions and the first since 1985. They won 18 of their 26 league games (D5 L3) to finish tied on points with Häcken, earning first place courtesy of a +1 superior goal difference.

Bajen completed their first domestic double by lifting the 2022/23 Svenska Cupen, beating Häcken 3-0 in the final on 6 June 2023.

They finished third behind Hacken and Rosengård in the 2024 campaign.

Including the Matchday 2 success, Barcelona have won all seven previous games against Swedish teams, six of them against Rosengård, scoring a combined 35 goals and conceding just once. They have scored 28 goals in the last four contests alone.

This is the third season in a row in which they have been drawn in the same group as a Swedish team.

Since losing at Manchester City in their Group D opener, Barcelona have scored a combined 20 goals in their three wins. A Francisca Nazareth double (20, 29) in addition to goals from Vicky López (31) and Alexia Putellas (57) helped them defeat St. Pölten last time out, putting them on the brink of reaching the last eight.

Barcelona retained the trophy by defeating eight-time winners Lyon 2-0 in last season's final in Bilbao, goals from Aitana Bonmatí (63) and Putellas (90+5) helping the Spanish side win their third title.

It was their second in succession after beating Wolfsburg 3-2 in the 2023 final in Eindhoven in which Patri Guijarro (48, 50) and Rolfö (70) found the net as the Spanish side rallied from two goals down at the break.

Barcelona have reached the final in five of the past six seasons, losing to Lyon in 2019 (1-4) and 2022 (1-3) in addition to their three triumphs.

Barcelona have also won three domestic trophies in 2024. In January they lifted the Supercopa de España Femenina before claiming a record-extending ninth Liga F title in a dominant league campaign consisting of 29 wins, one draw and no defeats. They clinched their tenth Copa de la Reina – also a record – with an 8-0 final victory against Real Sociedad on 18 May.

Barcelona have won seven of their eight away games in 2024/25, their only blip being that Matchday 1 defeat at Manchester City.

In charge since 2021, Jonatan Giráldez departed as head coach after last season's Champions League triumph; he has been succeeded by assistant Pere Romeu.
