Memories will be stirred of a famous UEFA Champions League knockout tie as Real Madrid welcome Monaco on Matchday 7.

The Spanish side have 12 points in this season's competition (W4 L2) and began Matchday 7 in seventh position in the league phase. Monaco were 19th on nine points (W2 D3 L1).

Last match

The teams' only previous fixtures came in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when Madrid won 4-2 in the Santiago Bernabéu first leg only to bow out on away goals after a 3-1 defeat in France; Fernando Morientes, on loan at Monaco from Madrid, scored in each leg.

Madrid have lost just one of their 18 home fixtures against French opposition (W13 D4) and are unbeaten in 14 (W10 D4) since a 0-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals in March 1994.

A 2-1 home victory against Marseille on Matchday 1 made it three wins in Madrid's last four games against French clubs (L1).

Monaco have won their last two games against Spanish opposition, most recently defeating Barcelona 2-1 at home on Matchday 1 last season.

However, the Ligue 1 club have only two wins in their 12 away games against Liga teams (D2 L8).

Real Madrid

Madrid are in the Champions League proper for the 30th time, a competition record they share with Barcelona. They have qualified for the knockout rounds in all 29 campaigns.

A team coached by Carlo Ancelotti were 11th in last season's league phase (W5 L3), eventually losing 1-5 on aggregate to Arsenal in the quarter-finals (0-3 a, 1-2 h).

Madrid parted company with coach Xabi Alonso on 12 January, appointing B team coach Álvaro Arbeloa as his replacement.

Monaco 

This is Monaco's 11th appearance in the Champions League proper – last season was their first since 2018/19.

The French club finished 17th in the 2024/25 league phase (W4 D1 L3) before being eliminated by Benfica in the knockout phase play-offs (0-1 h, 3-3 a).

Key stats

Kylian Mbappé scored 27 goals in 60 matches for Monaco between 2015 and 2017 while midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni found the net eight times in 95 games for the Principality club from 2020 to 2022.

Mbappé scored six goals in nine Champions League appearances for Monaco in 2016/17. He hit 11 in 14 games against the club while a Paris Saint-Germain player.

Mbappé is the top scorer in this season's Champions League on nine goals – already his highest tally for a single season.

A 1-2 defeat by Manchester City on Matchday 6 was only Madrid's second in 15 home group stage/league phase games (W13).

Aged 23 years 71 days, Eduardo Camavinga could become the second-youngest French player to reach 50 appearances in the Champions League proper after Mbappé (22 years 339 days).

A 1-0 home win against Galatasaray on Matchday 6 made it five Champions League games unbeaten for Monaco (W2 D3).

The French club have kept three clean sheets in their last four Champions League matches.
