Arsenal FC are poised to sign Brazil's FIFA World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Marcos, from SE Palmeiras.
Fee agreed
The two clubs have reportedly agreed a fee for the 29-year-old, who was travelling to London today for talks with the English double winners. Under the terms of the deal, it is understood Marcos would stay in Brazil for another six months and then join Arsenal in time for the 2003/04 season.
Key man
Marcos played in all of Brazil's games at the 2002 World Cup, but has had a frustrating time since as his club were relegated to the second division. He would become the second member of Brazil's squad in Korea/Japan to end up at Highbury, after the summer transfer of midfield player Gilberto.
Injuries to Seaman
Arsenal have been in the hunt for a new goalkeeper because of injuries to 39-year-old David Seaman and his understudies Stuart Taylor and Rami Shaaban. Marcos has been with Palmeiras since 1993 and featured in Brazil's 1999 Copa América team.
