Dramatic win
Basel, winners of both the cup and the Nationalliga A last season, secured a dramatic 4-3 away victory against BSC Young Boys. Two goals in the opening 28 minutes from Christian Giménez put Christian Gross's side in control, but Young Boys's Gürken Sermeter then scored a hat-trick in 16 minutes either side of half-time, with Basel also losing midfield player Carlos Varela to a red card.
Yakin decisive
However, Hervé Turm equalised for Basel after 65 minutes to take the match into extra time, before Hakan Yakin scored a dramatic winner after 107 minutes.
Late winner
Grasshoppers also left it late before securing their semi-final spot, with Mladen Petric scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 win at FC Luzern nine minutes from time. The away side had taken the lead midway through the first half with a Sebastian Rozental strike, but were pegged back after 65 minutes when André Muff equalised.
'Important progress'
"The only important thing for us was to qualify; in what way was in second place," said Grasshoppers coach Marcel Koller.
Xamax through
Meanwhile, Xamax reached the semi-finals for the eighth time, with a tenth-minute Alexander Rey goal giving them the lead at FC Wil 1900 before Leandro's second in added time sealed a 2-0 success. The fourth quarter-final sees FC St. Gallen travel to second division side FC Schaffhausen on Sunday.
Success for Servette
In the night's only league game, Servette FC claimed their first victory since the league resumed after its midwinter break with a 2-1 home success against FC Zürich. Leonard Thurre scored twice, putting the home side ahead after 16 minutes and then converting the winning goal four minutes past the hour after Alain Nef had equalised for Zürich.
