Faber forced into retirement

An achilles tendon injury has cut short the career of PSV Eindhoven defender Ernest Faber.

Advice taken
Faber opted to heed the advice of doctors, who told him he was no longer in good enough physical condition to play at the top level. The 32-year-old had achilles tendon surgery last year and never fully recovered from the operation. However, he was able to make one appearance in this season's UEFA Champions League, playing in PSV's 1-1 draw with AS Monaco FC last November.

Four-time winner
The central defender won the Dutch title four times at PSV but must now take stock of his options. "I would love to stay here and we have brainstormed on my future, but I have not made up my mind on the issue yet," he told the club's website. "Now I have been declared unfit for professional football it is time to consider my future. So far I have not received any concrete offers."

One cap
Faber, who has played alongside the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooij, Romário and Ronaldo during a 12-year spell at PSV, featured in 175 league games and scored six goals. He collected his one and only international cap in the Netherlands' 3-2 defeat of Mexico in February 1998.
