VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Hans Meyer has resigned following a run of disappointing results.
Lienen takes charge
Meyer stepped down following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against FC Schalke 04 that left the five-time German champions in 16th place in the 1. Bundesliga. The club said in a statement that Ewald Lienen, a former Mönchengladbach player and 1. FC Köln coach, would be Meyer's replacement. Lienen was in charge of Spanish second division side CD Tenerife until January this year.
Promotion success
Meyer joined Mönchengladbach in September 1999, when the club were in danger of relegation from the second division. Under his guidance, the side not only avoided relegation but won promotion back to the top flight last season.
Third departure
Meyer becomes the third Bundesliga coach to lose his job this season, after Andreas Brehme departed from 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Bayer 04 Leverkusen sacked Klaus Toppmöller two weeks ago.
