Article body
Michael Degiorgio was honoured before playing his last match for Hamrun Spartans FC in tonight's 1-1 championship pool game against Floriana FC.
Experienced international
The 39-year-old captain, who was capped 78 times by Malta, was the country's first professional player and was presented to the crowd in a special ceremony before the game. After the draw, Hamrun were left eight points adrift at the bottom of the championship pool.
Poor game
Hamrun actually took the lead with a well-worked goal from Stefan Sultana after 14 minutes. But, in a generally poor game, Floriana equalised through Nicolo Baldacchino's 49th-minute effort, leaving Hamrun stuck with just one win from their last nine games.
Joy for Lija
In the relegation group, Lija Athletic FC turned the form book on its head with a stunning 4-1 victory against Marsa FC, who topped this group of teams. Cardoso do Nascimento opened the scoring for Marsa after 14 minutes, but Lija equalised through Glenn Barry two minutes later. Alan Tabone put the home side in front two minutes after that, before both players, Barry (50) and Tabone (61), sealed a surprise win.
