Group 8: Piemonte on the brink

Italian club Piemonte Valle d'Aosta Amateur moved a step closer to the finals after topping qualifying Group 8.

Italian club Piemonte Valle d'Aosta Amateur moved a step closer to reaching the finals of the 2002/03 UEFA Regions' Cup after comfortably topping qualifying Group 8.

Unbeaten record
Piemonte, unbeaten in their three qualifying matches, must now take on the eventual winners of Group 10 for a place in the finals in June 2003. The Group 8 mini-tournament was staged between 23 and 27 September in Slovakia, with matches played in Dubnica Nad Vahom, Nemšová, Lednické Rovné, Povazská Bystrica and Trencin.

Convincing victory
Having opened their account with a 1-1 away draw against Slovakian side West Amateur in Lednické Rovné, Piemonte then took charge of their section as a goal in each half from Bergantin and D'errico secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Romania's Dacia Amateur.

Surprise result
The result came as something of a surprise following Dacia's 2-0 opening-day win against Ural Amateur of Russia - inspired by a double strike from Teican - and the Italian side maintained their advantage with a 3-0 victory over Ural in Dubnica Nad Vahom. Bergantin was again on the scoresheet, with Montalto adding two further goals to earn the three points.

West second
West finished the tournament as runners-up after coming from 1-0 and 2-1 down to secure a point against Ural in Nemšová. An emphatic 3-0 win in their final match against Dacia, with strikes from Cserge and Dekany and an own goal by Tataru doing the damage, confirmed West's second-place finish and relegated their beaten opponents into third spot.

Lowly Ural
Ural propped up the group table with a single point, from the 2-2 draw with West, and conceded seven goals in three matches.
