AFC Ajax's Romanian international Cristian Chivu was last night named the Dutch Player of the Year at a glittering ceremony in Hilversum.
Hagi presents award
The attacking defender was awarded the distinction by daily newspaper De Telegraaf and football magazine Voetbal International. Chivu delayed meeting up with Romania's squad to face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a EURO 2004™ qualifier on Saturday to accept the award from Gheorghe Hagi, his country's greatest footballer.
Schreuder second
The runner-up was NAC Breda's Alfred Schreuder, while former SC Heerenveen striker Marcus Allbäck, now at Aston Villa FC, and FC Utrecht's Dirk Juijt shared the spoils in third.
Van der Vaart honoured
Ajax prodigy Rafael van der Vaart was the winner of the Young Player of the Year award, while veteran Pierre van Hooijdonk claimed the award as top scorer for his 24 goals for Feyenoord.
