Van Marwijk commits to Feyenoord

Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk has signed a new two-year contract with the UEFA Cup holders.

Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk has signed a new contract with the UEFA Cup winners that will keep him at the club until 2004, with an option for an extra year.

UEFA Cup triumoh
Van Marwijk, 50, joined Feyenoord in 2000 after three years in charge of SC Fortuna Sittard and led the team to their success in the UEFA Cup final against BV Borussia Dortmund last May - won in their home De Kuip stadium. The club currently lie third in Group E of the UEFA Champions League and fourth in the Dutch first division.

New opportunities
Club technical director Rob Baan explained why the club had acted now to keep Van Marwijk at Feyenoord beyond the end of the season when his previous deal expired.  "Bert still sees opportunities for development in the squad and we feel the same way," said Baan. "Why would you wait any longer before signing a new contract? That would not be the sensible thing to do, even if it is just because of the competition. It has nothing to do with results."

Italy trip
Van Marwijk's side travel to play Juventus FC on Tuesday in the Champions League.
