Leverkusen lose Lucio

Bayer 04 Leverkusen will be without Lucio until January as the defender needs surgery on a foot injury.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen's UEFA Champions League challenge was rocked with the news that Brazilian FIFA World Cup defender Lucio needs to undergo surgery on a foot injury.

Out until January
Leverkusen coach Klaus Toppmöller revealed that Lucio was likely to be out of action until the 1. Bundesliga returns from its winter break in January, as injuries continue to hamper Leverkusen's domestic and European campaigns.

Home defeats
Last season's Champions League finalists lost 3-2 at home against Hamburger SV on Saturday just a few days after losing 2-1 at home against FC Barcelona in their first fixture in the second group stage of Europe's premier club competition.

Injury problems
The Leverkusen coach was without four key players for the game against Hamburg. Juan, Jens Nowotny, Zoltan Sebescen and Pascal Ojigwe all missed the clash through injury. Toppmöller also had to make do without Argentine defender Diego Placente, who was suspended.
