Deportivo dive in for Munúa

RC Deportivo La Coruña have signed Uruguay goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa from Club Nacional de Football.

RC Deportivo La Coruña have secured the services of Uruguay goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa from Club Nacional de Football on a six-year contract.

'Promised Land'
After completing his medical, the 25-year-old expressed his delight at signing for the Riazor side. "For me, it's a dream come true," he said. "Europe is just like the promised land for any player in America - it's a wonderful challenge for me."

Nine caps
The Montevideo-born Munúa, who has nine Uruguay caps, joins two established Spanish keepers at Deportivo - José Molina and Juanmi García - and the new boy is willing to be patient. "There are two really good goalkeepers already at the club," he added. "I arrived here to work hard and wait for my chance."

First signing
Having sold Roy Makaay to FC Bayern München and released Dani Mallo on loan, Munúa is the first addition to Javier Irureta's squad for the forthcoming season. As well as being a fine shot-stopper, Munúa has shown himself to be composed in front of goal - he converted a crucial last-minute penalty to give Nacional a 3-2 win against Oriente Petrolero in last season's Copa Libertadores.
