RC Celta de Vigo midfielder Giovanella is out of the tie against Arsenal FC.
The 33-year-old Brazilian played just twice in the group stage but has moved from the periphery to a regular place in the Celta midfield in recent weeks, playing every minute of their last five matches. "It's always a shame to pick up an injury like this," said Giovanella, who is expected to be sidelined for three weeks.
"It has come at a time when I was starting to play more games. It's disappointing to miss a Champions League tie because they are very special, but these things happen in football and you can't dwell on them," he added. Celta are at home to Arsenal next Tuesday before travelling to London for the return at Highbury on 10 March.
After struggling in the first part of the Primera División season, Celta have experienced a mini-revival under new coach Radomir Antic, winning their last two games to move four points clear of the relegation zone. Celta are at home to Málaga CF on Saturday.
