Olympique Lyonnais have signed Brazilian striker Nilmar from SC Internacional for €6.75m on a five-year deal.
French champions Olympique Lyonnais have signed promising Brazilian striker Nilmar from SC Internacional.
The 20-year-old, who was part of the Brazilian side that won the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, has signed a five-year contract after a €6.75m transfer. Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas said Nilmar, capped eight times at senior level by Brazil, was "an investment for the future" after his transfer was completed following a medical.
'Faster than Owen'
Coach Paul Le Guen welcomed Nilmar's arrival after Giovane Elber was ruled out possibly for the season with an ankle injury. Le Guen said: "He spends less time in the box than Giovane. He plays like [Wayne] Rooney or [Michael] Owen but is faster than Owen."
Speed 'main asset'
Nilmar added: "The game is fast in Europe and speed is my main asset." The forward will return to Brazil this weekend for their latest FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but could line up for Lyon's first UEFA Champions League fixture of the season at home to Manchester United FC before further Group D meetings with AC Sparta Praha and Fenerbahçe SK.
