Bremen mourn Böhmert death

Dr Franz Böhmert, former president of Werder Bremen and German Football Association board member, has died.

Successful reign
The 70-year-old was taken to hospital today after suffering a stroke, but doctors were unable to save his life. Böhmert presided over the reigning German champions between 1970 and 1999, with the club claiming the league title in 1988 and 1993 as well as three German Cups during that period.

Historic double
After stepping down as president, Böhmert took over as chairman of the club's supervisory board and saw Bremen claim a league-and-cup double in 2004. Furthermore, Böhmert was a member of the German Football Association's (DFB) board of directors between 2000 and 2004.

Tribute paid
"The death of Franz Böhmert is a huge loss to German football. I have lost a very good friend. He was someone I could always rely on and trust," said DFB head Gerhard Meyer-Vorfelder.
