Trading places
Portugal have swapped places with Greece in the coefficent rankings meaning they will have three teams entering the competition as opposed to the Greeks' two. The SuperLiga winners and runners-up will go directly into the Champions League group stage, with the third-placed side starting at the third qualifying round.
Three to two
In contrast, Greece will have just one direct entrant into the competition proper and one starting in the third qualifying round. In 2003/04, Panathinaikos FC and Olympiacos CFP both began in the group stage while PAOK FC failed to get past the third qualifying round.
Élite nations
Above Portugal, the top five of Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France will all again see their leading two domestic teams go straight into the last 32 of Europe's premier club competition. Spain, England and Italy will also send two additional sides into the third qualifying round, while Germany and France will have one more starting at that stage.
Chasing pack
Along with Greece, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic will each have one direct entrant into the group stage and one more going into the third qualifying round. The Czechs have taken the automatic group-stage spot that was previously awarded to Scotland's champions, meaning the top two Scottish sides will have to start in the third and second qualifying rounds respectively.
