Foot woe forces Ferreira out

Chelsea FC's Paulo Ferreira will miss both quarter-final ties against FC Bayern München through injury.

Broken bone
Ferreira, a €20m signing from FC Porto last June, sustained the injury to his right foot in Portugal's 1-1 draw with Slovakia in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 3 on Wednesday night and will have an operation to correct the problem on Saturday. It is not yet known how long the defender will be sidelined.

Saturday surgery
Chelsea doctor Bryan English said: "He has broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and it will be operated on tomorrow. He'll be out of hospital within 24 hours." Ferreira will certainly sit out both legs against Bayern, with the first game taking place at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday and the return in Germany six days later.
