Chelsea FC had most to celebrate of the UEFA Champions League semi-finalists this weekend after clinching the English Premiership title with victory at Bolton Wanderers FC. Liverpool FC drew with Middlesbrough FC, AC Milan defeated ACF Fiorentina and PSV Eindhoven drew 2-2 with FC Twente on Friday.
PSV problems
Dutch champions PSV twice came from behind through goals from Gerald Sibon and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to claim a point against Twente. But a disappointing result was compounded by injury to strikers DaMarcus Beasley and Jefferson Farfán. Farfán twisted his ankle on 24 minutes, while Beasley badly cut his left leg. Both face fitness tests ahead of Wednesday's second leg against Milan.
Ooijer suspended
Wilfred Bouma, Ji-Sung Park and Robert all missed the match through injury and only Park looks likely to play on Wednesday. And with André Ooijer suspended, coach Guus Hiddink has plenty to ponder as he looks to reverse a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
'Bold changes'
"I'm thinking out a few scenarios," Hiddink said. "We may opt for some bold changes, perhaps playing fewer men in defence than usual. But there's some time left before we meet Milan and some players may recover."
Shevchenko double
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti had the luxury of a near full-strength squad for his side's visit to ACF Fiorentina. Despite missing the suspended Paolo Maldini and Kakha Kaldadze, he was able to rest Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Hernán Crespo and still win 2-1 thanks to a pair of Andriy Shevchenko goals.
'Not concentrated'
"We played really defensively," said Ancelotti, whose side moved three points clear at the top of Serie A until Juventus FC won yesterday. "We weren't as concentrated as usual, but my players can perform in any conditions."
Chelsea champions
Chelsea will travel to Anfield to play Liverpool on Tuesday on a high after clinching the Premiership title with three matches to spare with a 2-0 victory away to Bolton. Chelsea manager José Mourinho rested Damien Duff and Arjen Robben as they recover from injury, Glen Johnson was also given the day off and Joe Cole dropped to the substitutes' bench.
'Massive game'
Frank Lampard got both goals to spark Chelsea's celebrations, but the midfielder insisted the festivities would be muted as thoughts turn to Liverpool. "I think they are going to be quiet. We know it's a massive game for us," he said. "The first thing we wanted to do was to win the league and now we want to beat Liverpool."
Gerrard goal
Chelsea's joy contrasted with the anger of Liverpool manager, Rafael Benítez, whose side drew 1-1 at home to Middlesbrough. Liverpool had Steven Gerrard to thank for a point, the captain scoring with a dipping 30-metre volley on 52 minutes to cancel out Szilard Nemeth's early strike.
Missed opportunity
The draw allowed Liverpool to close to within three points of Everton FC in the race for the fourth Champions League qualifying spot, but it represented another missed opportunity as their Merseyside rivals lost to Fulham FC. Liverpool have won just once in five Premiership matches.
'Very unhappy'
"I'm very unhappy with a lot of things about my team," Benítez said. "The result is not good and we only played for 20 minutes in the second half. I hope we will see a different Liverpool on Tuesday night."
Five changes
Benítez made five changes from the team that drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Sami Hyypiä, Djimi Traoré, Luis García, Milan Baroš and Igor Bišcan all rested. One bright note for Benítez was the return of Dietmar Hamann as a late substitute after injury.
