Madrid greats honoured by UEFA

Real Madrid CF heroes past and present have become the latest recipients of the Champions of Europe plaques celebrating 50 years of the European Cup.

Past and present
As UEFA continues throughout the season to pay tribute to the players and coaches who have had a significant role in the success of the competition, Madrid heroes past and present lined up to receive their plaques at an event attended by new Madrid president Fernando Martín and the club's vice-president Emilio Butragueño.

Awards ceremony
Receiving acclaim were Raúl González, David Beckham, José Emilio Santamaría, Marquitos, Francisco Gento and, to the loudest applause of all, Alfredo Di Stéfano. The late Luis Carniglia, Miguel Muñoz, Héctor Rial and Luis Villalonga were represented by family members, as was another star of the 1950s, Zárraga. The latter was unable to collect his accolade, along with modern-day luminaries Zinédine Zidane, Roberto Carlos and Vicente del Bosque.

Johansson tribute
The UEFA President said of the club that won the first European Cup final in 1956: "Lots of players, coaches and referees have graced this competition, but what stands out for me is the final against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, or the Zidane volley in 2002, which was the best goal scored in a UEFA Champions League final."
