The Italy defender scored in the final as the Azzurri won the FIFA World Cup before learning that Inter were retrospectively crowned 2005/06 Serie A champions following the Italian match-fixing tribunal. The 32-year-old's previous deal was due to expire in summer 2009, meaning he has been given an extra 12 months at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium. He joined Inter for the 2001/02 campaign and has since made 105 league appearances, scoring eight goals. Materazzi has been capped 32 times.
