Méndez pledges PSV improvement

Ecuadorian international Edison Méndez insists his "best is yet to come" after starring in PSV Eindhoven's 0-0 UEFA Champions League draw against Liverpool FC.

Promising start
PSV Eindhoven look to have picked up another sublime talent from South America in the 68-times capped international. Having scored twice on his debut against Willem II on Saturday, he was voted Man of the Match for his performance against Group C favourites Liverpool in a sultry Philips Stadion on Tuesday evening.

'Not 100 per cent yet'
"When you play your first match for a new club you never really know how it will go," he told uefa.com. "As it happened things turned out well for me because I scored twice and put in a good performance. The most important thing is that I can do well for PSV and to continue my development. I aim to improve, especially when I get to know the other players better. I'm not 100 per cent yet - the best is yet to come."

Bullish mood
Méndez was in a bullish mood despite his team drawing a blank against their English opponents. "We are not very happy with the result," he said. "Even though we were playing against the best team in the group, we still wanted to win. I felt we should have scored at least once."

Frustrating
He admitted that Liverpool frustrated the home side's attacking impulses, saying: "They played like many teams do nowadays - not necessarily defensive but extremely compact, with little space between defence, midfield and attack. That makes it very difficult to get through. We should have played more down the wings to open up their defence. We tried in the second half but it just wasn't enough."

Dangerous on the break
Méndez acknowledged that midfield was the key area of the game. "That's where it was going to be won or lost tonight. But we couldn't commit too many additional players there or up front because Liverpool were very dangerous and quick on the break," he said. "They very nearly scored in the last minute when Gerrard hit the post."
