Article body
Valencia CF defender Carlos Marchena is likely to miss the remainder of the UEFA Champions League group stage after tearing the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Early departure
The 27-year-old Spanish international was taken off after just 19 minutes of Valencia's 2-0 win against Getafe CF on Sunday and is expected to need at least three months to recover - a lay-off which would rule the left-sided defender out until 2007.
Lengthening injury list
Valencia have got off to a superb start this season despite a lengthening injury list that also includes David Albelda, Asier Del Horno, Rubén Baraja and David Villa. They are joint top of the Primera División with three wins from three games and kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 4-2 victory away to Olympiacos CFP. Valencia are at home to AS Roma in their next Group D match on 27 September.
