Cañizares has signed a contract which will keep him at the Mestalla Stadium until June 2009 having been with the club since 1998 after four seasons at Real Madrid CF. Valencia arranged a special media conference to honour the 46-times international, with an official statement praising a player who has "brought class, professionalism and team spirit during one of the greatest decades in Valencia's history".

After watching a video of some of his finest moments with Valencia in front of an audience of players, staff, family and press, Cañizares said: "I hope there will be even more great moments like we saw in the film in the two extra years I have agreed in my contract." So far, Cañizares has won two Spanish titles, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup with the east-coast team. Valencia take on FC Internazionale Milano in the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League next week.
