Manchester United FC have completed the signing of Argentinian international striker Carlos Tévez.
'Delighted'
"Manchester United is delighted to announce that Carlos Tévez has been registered as a member of its first-team squad by the Premier League," the English champions said in a statement. The 23-year-old joins United after a protracted transfer dispute with his former club West Ham United FC was resolved last week.
West Ham survival
Tévez was instrumental in helping the London team avoid relegation last season, scoring seven goals in their final ten games including the winner on the last day at Old Trafford that ensured West Ham's survival. United kick off the defence of their Premier League title at home to Reading FC on Sunday, although manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Tévez would probably have to wait until the trip to Manchester City FC on 19 August for his debut. "He's likely to be involved the following week against Manchester City," Sir Alex said. "But it's difficult to assess what part he'll play because if you put somebody into a derby game, you have to make sure they're spot on."
'Getting better'
The green light for Tévez should further raise confidence levels at Old Trafford. "What you want to see in a team now, after having won the league, is more authority, more consistency and continuity of their game," Sir Alex added. "We expect the young players to improve a lot, like [Wayne] Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo. They will get better. There's no doubt in my mind. We also expect more authority from players like [Darren] Fletcher, [John] O'Shea, [Nemanja] Vidić and [Patrice] Evra. We have to see improvement there, and I think we have the right people to call on in terms of experience in [Gary] Neville, [Ryan] Giggs and [Paul] Scholes, [Rio] Ferdinand and [Edwin] Van der Sar."
