Manchester United FC expect to be without defender Mikaël Silvestre for the rest of the season after it was confirmed he sustained a cruciate ligament injury to his right knee.
Awkward fall
The 30-year-old left-back was carried off after 40 minutes of United's 1-0 victory at Everton FC on Saturday after falling awkwardly on what was his first appearance since the opening day of the campaign. The French international will now miss his club's entire UEFA Champions League group stage programme, beginning on Wednesday away to Sporting Clube de Portugal, as well as France's remaining UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying games.
Injury problems
Silvestre joins a list of players in the Manchester United treatment room that includes two other serious knee injury victims, Korea Republic midfielder Park Ji Sung and goalkeeper Ben Foster. Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea are also sidelined, leaving Patrice Evra as the only fit left-back at Old Trafford.
