Article summary
Liverpool FC could be without striker Andriy Voronin for both legs of their first knockout round encounter with FC Internazionale Milano because of an ankle injury.
Article body
Liverpool FC will be deprived of the services of Andriy Voronin for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League first knockout round tie against FC Internazionale Milano as the Ukrainian international requires an operation on an ankle injury.
Training injury
The 28-year-old forward damaged the joint in training earlier this week and, after it was discovered the problem was worse than first thought, he will be sidelined for six weeks. This rules Voronin – who has scored three goals in ten Premier League starts for Liverpool since joining on a free transfer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen – out of the home match against Inter on 19 February. It also puts his participation in the return leg in Milan on 11 March in serious doubt.
Defensive absences
Also struggling to be fit for the game at Anfield is versatile defender Álvaro Arbeloa, with the 25-year-old expected to be absent for three weeks due to an abdominal problem. Centre-back Daniel Agger, meanwhile, faces at least another fortnight on the treatment table having not played since 15 September because of a fractured foot.
