Facial surgery for Čech after accident

Chelsea FC have confirmed that goalkeeper Petr Čech has had surgery following a training ground accident which left the No1 with lacerations to his lip and chin.

Ankle injury
The surgery represents a further setback for the 25-year-old Czech Republic No1 who has not played since 1 March having sustained an ankle injury on the eve of the UEFA Champions League first knockout round second leg against Olympiacos CFP. That 3-0 victory earned Chelsea a quarter-final against Fenerbahçe SK, who won last week's opening game 2-1 in Istanbul. Carlo Cudicini will make it ten appearances in succession – his longest run since the 2003/04 season, after which Čech arrived from Stade Rennais FC – when the Turkish title-holders visit Stamford Bridge on Tuesday with a semi-final place at stake. "Petr will begin his rehabilitation immediately and we hope to have him back playing as soon as possible," Chelsea said.
