French champions Olympique Lyonnais have swelled their ranks by capturing Ghana centre-back John Mensah from fellow Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais FC.
French champions Olympique Lyonnais have announced the signing of experienced Ghana centre-back John Mensah from Ligue 1 rivals Stade Rennais FC.
Lyon have moved quickly to strengthen their roster after Sébastien Squillaci switched to Sevilla FC and Brazilian defender Anderson returned home with São Paulo FC. The 25-year-old did not play in Rennes' 1-0 UEFA Intertoto Cup success against SC Tavriya Simferopol on Saturday and will now swap that competition for the UEFA Champions League, which Lyon will enter at the group stage.
Mensah is believed to have signed a five-year contract with the transfer fee reported at €8.4m. "I had some options in England but I preferred Lyon – the best team in France for years," he said. "And I'm very happy to play alongside great players like Juninho Pernambucano, Karim Benzema and Kim Källström, who I met at Rennes."
A regular in Ghana's team with 54 caps to his name, Mensah scored two Ligue 1 goals in 60 games at Rennes. The Accra-born stopper arrived in Europe with Bologna FC in 2000 before joining Swiss second division side AC Bellinzona. He then continued his career in Italy with spells at Genoa CFC, AC Chievo Verona, Modena FC and US Cremonese before moving to France.
