Basel land River Plate striker

FC Basel 1893 have signed former Argentina Under-20 striker Federico Almerares from CA River Plate, creating space in the dressing room by releasing Louis Crayton.

Limited opportunities
Almerares has joined Basel, who on Wednesday defeated IFK Göteborg to reach the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, on a three-year contract. The 23-year-old has spent his entire career with River Plate, but managed only 13 senior league appearances and four goals. Liberian goalkeeper Crayton, meanwhile, has left the Swiss title-holders for a new challenge with US Major League Soccer club D.C. United. Basel face Portugal's Vitória SC in the third qualifying round on 13 and 27 August.
