Rossi in fitness race for group stage

Striker Giuseppe Rossi is a doubt for Villarreal CF's return to the UEFA Champions League after spraining his ankle in a collision with Marcos Senna in training.

Opening fixtures
The 21-year-old will be sidelined for two to three weeks after suffering the knock, meaning he will miss Villarreal's Liga fixtures against CA Osasuna and RC Deportivo La Coruña. Rossi will also be a major doubt for the club's first UEFA Champions League appearance since reaching the semi-finals in 2005/06 when they turn out in the group stage on 16/17 September. Villarreal's opponents will be determined by Thursday's group stage draw, and coach Manuel Pellegrini will also be without Nihat Kahveci due to a thigh injury picked up at UEFA EURO 2008™.
