Manchester United FC's first UEFA Champions League victory of the campaign has come at a price with Paul Scholes set to miss up to two months of action with a knee ligament injury picked up against Aalborg BK.
Stretcher
The club confirmed that the 33-year-old had suffered knee ligament damage early in the Group E victory in Denmark last night, a match in which Scholes was carried off on a stretcher following a tackle with Thomas Augustinussen. The former England player is expected to sit out the forthcoming double-header against Celtic FC and the trip to El Madrigal to face Villarreal CF on 25 November.
'Cost to pay'
Sir Alex Ferguson, who was also forced to substitute Wayne Rooney – the scorer of the opening goal in the 3-0 win – and right-back Rafael due to knocks, said: "There were a lot of plus points but we lost Paul Scholes. We had one or two other injuries. Young Rafael got injured and Rooney has an ankle problem. He felt a weakness in it when he went to receive a ball and we took him off straightaway. So there was maybe a cost to pay for the victory. Nonetheless we have four points now and it's where we want to be."
