Frustrated Fred laments Lyon draw

Olympique Lyonnais striker Fred told uefa.com the French champions harboured more than a few regrets after their 1-1 draw with FC Bayern München on Tuesday.

Unbeaten duo
A Martín Demichelis own goal gave Claude Puel's side a first-half lead in Bavaria only for Zé Roberto's powerful header seven minutes into the second half to earn Bayern a point and cement their hold on top spot in Group F. The result means both sides remain unbeaten after two matches, but Fred insisted the visitors could have deservedly left the Fußball Arena München with their first win of this season's competition.

'Deserved more'
"A point is not bad. We played well, but we deserved more," said the 24-year-old Brazilian, who was denied an early goal when Bayern keeper Michael Rensing produced a world-class save to parry his point-blank header. "We had good movement, especially in the first half. Juninho [Pernambucano]'s free-kicks created chances for us to perhaps lead two or three-nil. We didn't manage to score, but that can happen sometimes."

Late chance
Although Luca Toni twice forced Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris into action either side of the interval, the Ligue 1 leaders more than matched their hosts. Karim Benzema could even have snatched all three points in the closing minutes only to stumble after rounding Rensing allowing Breno to clear the danger as Lyon recorded their second consecutive draw following a 2-2 stalemate with ACF Fiorentina on Matchday 1.

'Good opportunities'
"We played very well in the first half, but in the second half there was a period of 20-25 minutes where we had a few problems when they dominated and they got the equaliser," Jean II Makoun told uefa.com. "We then had some very good opportunities on the counterattack, because they were going forward. I think we put in a better performance than we did in the last match."

Steaua test
While Bayern now test themselves against Fiorentina, Lyon will hold ambitions of closing the two-point gap to the German champions as Puel's men head into a potentially decisive home-and-away double-header with FC Steaua Bucureşti. "The next matches are very important for us in terms of qualifying for the next round," said Fred. "We're going to try and win them both, but we know that it's going to be very difficult. Fiorentina have drawn with Steaua tonight. It's a good result for us and for Bayern, but it means that anything is still possible in this group."
