Bayern set sights on Lyon scalp

With qualification assured, the message from the FC Bayern München camp after last night's 3-0 defeat of FC Steaua Bucureşti was that they are gunning for Olympique Lyonnais on Matchday 6 and top spot in Group F.

With qualification assured with a match to play, the message from the FC Bayern München squad after last night's 3-0 defeat of FC Steaua Bucureşti was that they are gunning for Olympique Lyonnais and first place in Group F.

Lyon test
Two Miroslav Klose goals and a Luca Toni header maintained an unbeaten run in Group F, but Jürgen Klinsmann's side remain in second place following Lyon's win against ACF Fiorentina in Italy. Bayern travel to face the Ligue 1 champions on Matchday 6, and though their spot in the last 16 is already secure, the German titleholders want to at least match the 1-1 draw Lyon achieved in Bavaria to leapfrog Claude Puel's men.

'Next goal'
"We're satisfied because we wanted to win at home and we managed to achieve that," said Klose, who set up Toni's strike with an astute header just four minutes after giving Bayern a 57th-minute lead. His second and Bayern's third, courtesy of a darting run and pass from Franck Ribéry, capped a magnificent individual display. "We had to score some goals to get closer to Lyon, and we managed to do that," added the German international, while captain Mark van Bommel told uefa.com: "It was an important game for us because there was a chance to go through to the next round. We've done that now and our next goal is to be first in the group."

'No doubts'
A stubborn first-half showing which kept Bayern at arm's length will give Steaua coach Dorinel Munteanu optimism that his team can secure third place in the section and UEFA Cup qualification at home to Fiorentina in two weeks' time. For Van Bommel, however, "there were no doubts" that Bayern would prevail. "We played well, had a few big chances and should have scored. We didn't, but we managed to do so in the second half," said the Dutchman.

'Lyon strong'
Bayern now put their 12-match unbeaten run on the line against domestic title rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – the only sides ahead of Klinsmann's in the Bundesliga – in a pair of encounters which will set them up nicely for their decider in Lyon. "We want to try and top the group as that means you get your away game first in the next round. It won't be easy as Lyon are strong, but we're confident," added Van Bommel. "It'll be important not to lose in Lyon."
