McGeady looks back on a wasted chance

It was an evening of mixed emotions for Celtic FC as they exited European competition in the wake of a disappointing UEFA Champions League campaign which concluded with a 2-0 home victory against Villarreal CF last night.

Important win
For Aiden McGeady – scorer of the Bhoys' second goal in his first start since returning from a month sidelined with a knee injury – the nature of the Scottish champions' departure from continental competition, confirmed by a 2-1 defeat at Aalborg BK on Matchday 5, still rankles. "We haven't covered ourselves in glory in the Champions League this season," he said. "We have come close at times, but it's just not happened for us. So, in that sense, it was very important we got the win against Villarreal.

Personal gain
"It's disappointing because we believe we are a better team than Aalborg, but they performed better than us and now they're going to the UEFA Cup, while we are out of Europe. From my own point of view, though, I suppose I can take a lot from the game having made my first start for nearly five weeks and then capping that off with the goal." Villarreal progress to the knockout stages behind Group E winners Manchester United FC.
