FC Internazionale Milano's defensive problems have worsened with the news that Cristian Chivu has failed to recover from a thigh injury and has not been included in the squad for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League first knockout round tie at Manchester United FC on Wednesday.
Fresh blow
Inter lost centre-backs Marco Materazzi and Nicolás Burdisso to injuries in Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Genoa CFC but were hoping that Chivu would be available, though he had not played since he damaged his thigh in the goalless first leg against United. However, the 28-year-old Romania captain will not be able to take part in the return at Old Trafford, and there are also doubts over Walter Samuel, as he continues to be troubled by a calf injury. Samuel will travel but if he does not feature midfielder Esteban Cambiasso could be moved back to partner Iván Córdoba in defence, as he did at Genoa after Materazzi and Burdisso were forced off.
