Daniel Van Buyten knows FC Bayern München's record scoreline against Sporting Clube de Portugal will count for little in the quarter-finals, but told uefa.com the German champions "had fun" as they won 7-1 in Munich.
Historic achievement
In winning 12-1 overall, the German champions registered the UEFA Champions League's record aggregate margin of victory as Tuesday's spectacular second-leg success outstripped their 5-0 triumph in Lisbon two weeks ago. It was an emphatic way to clinch a quarter-final place, but Van Buyten dwelled only briefly on the four-time European champions' historic achievement. "It's not every day that you win 7-1 in the Champions League," said the Belgian international. "We're happy with the result, and the way we achieved it. Now we have to look forward to the next match. We did very well today, but there's going to be another match to play, and we know that it's going to be difficult."
Memorable night
Fears Bayern would stroll through the evening were allayed when Lukas Podolski struck just seven minutes in to spark a glut of four first-half goals for the hosts. Though João Moutinho ensured Sporting would not return home entirely empty-handed, Jürgen Klinsmann's men added three more in the final 16 minutes, including a seventh of the campaign for the competition's joint-leading scorer Miroslav Klose, to give the capacity crowd at the Fußball Arena München a night to remember.
'We had fun'
"People come to be entertained, to see goals," explained the 31-year-old Van Buyten, who – along with central defensive partner Lucio – enjoyed a relatively peaceful evening. "In a game like that, it's dangerous not to start at 100 per cent because the opposition could score and then uncertainty creeps in. So, to avoid taking any risks, we tried to play how we like to play – we had fun out there."
Unbeaten run
Bayern have made up for lost time after failing to qualify for the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League and are unbeaten after eight games this season, having scored 24 goals and conceded just five. However, Van Buyten acknowledged the teams joining Bayern in next week's quarter-final and semi-final draws will all be worthy opponents. "I think that the teams in the quarter-finals are good teams, but it would be nice to draw an English team," said the former Manchester City FC player. "The atmosphere there is really good and I think that it's a type of football that would suit us. But the teams that are in the quarter-finals can all win the Champions League. Bayern are among those teams. If we get past the quarter-finals, then we can win it, just like the others."
