Liverpool FC manager Rafael Benítez has ended any speculation over his future at Anfield by signing a new deal, tying him to the English club until 2014. "I love the club, the fans and the city," he explained. "I could not say no to staying."
'New chapter'
The former Valencia CF coach, 48, has penned a five-year contract, capping a memorable nine days for the red half of Merseyside following comprehensive victories against Real Madrid CF and Manchester United FC. "My heart is with Liverpool, so I'm delighted to sign this new deal," said Benítez. "I always made clear I wanted to be here for a long time and when I complete my new contract it will mean I have spent over a decade in Liverpool. The club [has an] incredible history and tremendous heritage. It is my aim to uphold those values and help create a new chapter in our history."
Honours
Benítez arrived at Anfield in 2004, replacing Gérard Houllier having guided Valencia to the UEFA Cup and Liga titles the previous season. That success continued, with Liverpool famously coming from three goals down to beat AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League final in his first campaign. The Rossoneri had their revenge in the showpiece two years later, and while he guided the side to the FA Cup in 2006 the Premier League title has thus far eluded Benítez. Saturday's 4-1 triumph at Old Trafford has revived hopes that 2008/09 could be Liverpool's year, however.
'Great momentum'
"With Rafa continuing to manage the team, we can look forward to more great football and success on the pitch," said co-owner George Gillett. "Coming after our excellent wins over Real Madrid and Manchester United, this gives us great momentum going into the final stages of the season." Having beaten Madrid, Liverpool will learn their UEFA Champions League quarter-final opponents on Friday when the draw is made in Nyon, Switzerland, starting at 12.00CET.
